Build a relentless on field engine
Based on the exercises and drills used by professional rugby league players and teams in competitions like the NRL and Super League, this 4-week template is perfect for both coaches and individual athletes looking for guidance on conditioning for contact and collision sports. This includes, but is not limited to, the two codes of rugby.
In the modern game, fitness and game conditioning are perhaps the most important elements for success, given the attritional nature of the games at the highest levels. This 4-week template uses the principles of progressive overload which will be familiar from any decent strength and conditioning program to build a well-rounded, don't quit engine.
Coaches can choose to integrate the template and its principles into their pre-season training regime, or individual athletes can use it to get fit for the pre-season, or to mount a come back from injury, or to catch up or get ahead of the competition. Alternatively, take the drills and principles you want and integrate them into your own programming, whether coach or player.
The template as a whole is designed to cover all the bases needed for a contact and collision athlete: slower, grinding conditioning and gruelling up/downs, faster, higher speed and higher intensity repeat efforts, as well as the missing ingredient from many conditioning programs: conditioning for contact. As we always say, it isn't the running that gets you, it's the trying to hit and control opponents who are trying to do the same to you.
